I am guilty of all the smartphone sins—in essence, staring at the phone when you should be staring at life. It’s possible that the act of taking a picture has such appeal because it manages to do several opposing things at once—I am allowed to pet the phone, to let the phone flatter me with its news, to let the phone mediate reality for me, and also to see what is going on around me and bear witness to a moment in my children’s lives, even if I am seeing it on-screen. To mitigate this, I often shoot blind, like firing a gun at the hip while I look directly at the action.”

- from “SAYING GOODBYE TO NOW” by Thomas Beller, The New Yorker (via tinkerkid)

richiedcruz:

The typical biography of a hut begins with its housing a couple or , in a polygynous household, a wife with her children. As the hut ages, it is successively turned into a guest house or a house for a widow, a teenagers’ hangout, kitchen, and, finally, goat or a chicken house — until at last the termites win and the structure collapses. The physical state of the hut at each given age corresponds to a particular use. For a hut to be out of phase in its use makes a Suku uncomfortable, and it conveys a message. Thus, to house a visitor in a hut that should be a kitchen says something about the visitor’s status; and if there is no visitors’ hut available in a compound, it says something about the compound-head’s character—he must be lazy, inhospitable, or poor.”

- Igor Kopytoff, The Cultural Biography of Things, 1986

"Ancient stones in landscapes, the subject matter of this book, cannot be known or understood simply..."

““Ancient stones in landscapes, the subject matter of this book, cannot be known or understood simply from publications, from maps, diagrams, photographs and descriptions, because these are only representations. As representations they necessarily fail in conveying a bodily understanding of prehistoric remains. Statistical analysis, Geographical Information Systems and simulations are, if anything, far worse. There can be no substitute for the human experience of place—of being there—and it is only after this that the various technologist of representation come into play.””

- Christopher Tilley, the Materiality of Stone, 2004:218

lawsoffateherbal:
